Devotional: Surrendering to God's Goodness - Day 1

Surrendering to God's Goodness

Day 1: The Heart God Seeks

Reading:
Joel 2:12-13;
12 Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
13 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

Jeremiah 29:8-11
8 For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.
9 For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the Lord.
10 For thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Devotional: God doesn't want religious performance—He wants your authentic heart. The ancient practice of tearing garments was an outward display, but God calls us to "rend your heart and not your garments." He sees beyond our external expressions to the true condition of our hearts. Why does He ask this? Because "He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness." God's plans for you are "thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a hope and a future." When you approach God with your real self—struggles, doubts, and all—you encounter His overwhelming goodness. Today, stop performing and start being honest with God. He already knows everything; He's simply waiting for you to trust Him with it.

Reflection: What "garments" am I tearing instead of truly opening my heart to God?
